CITY OF MALOLOSThe Magistral Organization of Future English Mentors (MORFEME) held their first major event dubbed "Magical Day" at Bulacan State University’s Roxas Hall Room 408-410 today, October 20.

After a few years of absence, an active student organization was finally established for the College of Education’s (COED) Bachelor of Secondary Education Major in English program. MORFEME, the newly created COED-based student organization consisting of English major students, marked their momentous event as they formally introduced the organization to its members led by the Prime Magister and Founding President Jeibhine Turla. Expressing his warm welcome through his opening remarks, the COED Dean Dr. Rafael DJ Dayao said he is delighted to have MORFEME join COED’s existing set of student organizations. He added that he looks forward to the future projects of MORFEME. MORFEME Adviser Christian D. Tuazon, a BulSU faculty member and a Filipino major graduate, admitted that his undergraduate degree did not stop him from accepting the position of handling an organization consisting of English major students. He said it was the call of duty to be a guiding light for the students that pushed him to be the neophyte organization’s first adviser. “Narito lang ako handang sumuporta at gumabay sa mga proyekto sa ating kolehiyo”, Mr. Tuazon emphasized. Proceeding the opening remarks was the reading and discussion of the crafted MORFEME Constitution and By-Laws to familiarize its members with matters such as the organizational structure, the election process in selecting the officers, and membership. It was followed by a presentation and awarding of the winning participants of their recently held “LITERA-See The Magic” competition.

The competition had multiple categories that enthusiastic English majors joined and participated in: Slogan making, Literacy quiz bee, Digital poster making, Bookmark design making, Short story, and Creative storytelling.

In addition, special awards were given to individuals who contributed to the organization by spending their time, effort, and creativity in the creation of MORFEME’s official logo, lanyard, and shirt.

Hailing from the neighboring College of Arts and Letters, junior-year BA Journalism student Nash Villena was among the three people given a special award.

Villena, a close affiliate to Prime Magister Turla, created the organization’s official logo which was first publicized on MORFEME’s Facebook page last July 23.

A light at the end of the tunnel

Deputy Magister Sunshine Banting shared that the English majors once had a student organization named E-Cirlcle. A formerly well-known student organization for English majors in COED. She said that the E-Circle had an “internal problem” that prompted its operation to be halted up to the point that the Office of the Student Organization and Activities (OSOA) did not recognize it since after the issue erupted. Prime Magister Jeibhine Turla, a now-junior year student, expressed that the impact of the E-Circle’s inactivity left the English major students in the dark for quite some time; aimless of building a sense of community among their sections and year levels.

It is what he and his peers hope to fulfill upon their decision to plan to establish MORFEME back when they were still sophomore students.

Moreover, he also pointed out that given that the College of Education has various programs, elected Local Student Council Board Members are proven not enough to cater to the needs and queries of freshmen every year thus student organizations also serve to fill those roles and, in the process, build connections with their colleagues. A bright future ahead hereon

Concluding the program, an oath-taking ceremony of the officers was led by the Prime Magister in the presence of English major students and MORFEME members alike.

When asked about his hopes throughout their term, Prime Magister Turla wished for more successful activities for MORFEME other than the Magical Day and achieve the organization’s primary goal.

“Ang goal talaga namin is to spread the importance of reading comprehension”, he said. He also added that MORFEME is currently taking steps to generate and resource income for them to create activities and initiatives related to their goal to be of service.
